SPECIAL NORCAL THURSDAY NET MAY 22nd

Next Thursday 5/22/08 we will have no normal net. If all goes well we will have a special edition of the net;
I'll be taking check-ins from the Deadman Pass / Mammoth Mt. area in DM07 just about due east of Modesto.
The site is about 9000 ft. and last time I was there I could here both N6NB/b and KJ6KO/b on a single loop.
I plan to run a single M29 and about 300W.

If I never show up on Thursday night, there was too much snow or I was running late, etc.

Let's hope things go as planed.

I'll be out and about in Inyo Co. for the W6I special event celebrating the
101 st. anniversary of the Inyo National Forest.
The event will run from 5/23 to 5/27. I'll literally be hitting the high points in the area.

I'll be on 20m 14.257. +/- USB. Unlike most SE's I plan to spend a lot of time on 6m and 2m.
On 6m, I'll call on 50.125 when it's quite then moving off to 50.157.
On 2m I'll call on 144.200 and move off to 144.250 USB.

I'll put out a few calls on 2m FM as well.

Hope to hear you ! 73 Robin W6DWI

The Staal Antenna Ranch

It was one of those perfect days when Sue and I cruised down the highway towards the High Sierras and ultimately to Mike & Myrna Staal’s Antenna Ranch.  Cruising a few miles behind us was W6BO, Bob and Janet, W6JND.  The best and only possible reason for this trip was the Annual Ham Migration to the M² Plant to enjoy the lip-smacking BBQ and jaw-flapping SWAP meet.

We arrived at the Antenna Ranch and were greeted by two friendly canine pets (CQ and DX) trying to herd Mike and Myrna on their Quads at the top of the hill. As we wound our way down the driveway our front truck window view was filled with a three element 80 meter beam pointed towards Europe, a four bay of six meters and a four bay of two meter beams poised to pick up the first peak of the moon on the horizon.  Eight 432 antennas sat at 50 feet looking like a sentinel guarding the home front (better known as the Antenna Ranch.)  Other towers and antenna systems were showing themselves as yet another greeting from the RF world of the Staals.  Mike and Myrna’s home and surrounding test range was showing the practical experience that they put into all of their systems.  The shop was filled with works in progress and we were treated to a great introduction of over-the-top invention and creativity.  WOW!

The evening presented a great spread of Salmon, salad, rice, desserts, etc. to die for… Oh my poor calorie count was high.  (Sue will have me on bread and water for a week or more after this visit. She’s keeping my figure slim and trim…hi hi.)

It was fun to see and visit with Wyatt, Gina, Matt, Tracy, and Jeremy his significant (Shucks I can’t remember her name) and Dave and Alicia!

I must stay on track and get on with my story telling… Morning brought us coffee and muffins.  Sue ate oatmeal while CQ and DX (the dogs) were enjoying their morning run with Mike to get the paper.  (It should be pointed out that Mike was not running, instead, he was riding the Quad.  Even so, both CQ and DX beat him back to the house.)  Within an hour or so we headed for the Plant and a wonderful time with our Ham friends.  All Ham special needs for antenna and radios were fulfilled…the SWAP area was loaded with new and used equipment…all treasures!

After a great morning of SWAPPING the cooks presented the BBQ and we moved inside the plant to a well set up table and chair area for eating and kibitzing.  Then, Wyatt started the drawings… Ham drawings consisted of Loops for 6, 2, 220 and 70cm, Beams for 6, 2, 222, and 440.  M² shirts and caps were given away and Non Ham items of a MP3 Player, Stereo, Picnic set, Ice chest, etc.  We all appreciated being winners.

Once again this cherished event was a perfect start to the SWAP season out here and we can all thank the Staals and their friendly staff for putting up with us and showing us such a great time.  Also, thanks to all of you who attended…it was a pleasure to see you.  Hopefully, your fun-meter was pegged and you enjoyed yourself to the max…we did.
